Electrical Safety During The Holiday

Ensure Electrical Safety During The Holiday Season

Use Caution With Holiday Lights and Decorations

Decorating with lights for the holidays is a great way to bring Christmas cheer. Christmas lights can also, unfortunately, become an electrical hazard when not used properly. To ensure that your Christmas lights don’t pose any risk to you or your family, make sure that you:

Only use lights and decorations that have been tested for safety

Did you know that, in Australia, safe Christmas lights all have an Australian Approval Number? Look out for numbers Q12345, V01294 or N12345 to make sure your lights are safe to use.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation and use

Installing Christmas lights may seem straightforward, but please check the instructions anyway. The best way to avoid installation issues is to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to the letter.

Use low voltage lights

While you may want the brightest house on the street, aim to use extra low voltage lights wherever possible. This can prevent fires and surges while reducing your Christmas energy bill.

Don't use indoor lights outside, and vice versa

Lights are categorised as indoor and outdoor for a reason. Double-check that your lights are appropriate for either indoor or outdoor use and ensure that all your outdoor connections are weatherproof.

Don't overload outlets or extension cords

Are all your Christmas lights plugged into one outlet? Spread the power source for your light display to avoid overloading your system.

Turn off all lights and decorations before going to bed or leaving the house

It may be tempting to leave your Christmas lights on for all to see, but the best practice is to switch them all off when you’re asleep or away from home. This will reduce the risk of an electrical fire.

Check for damage

Have your Christmas lights seen better days? Check the lights and cables for damage, especially if they are going to be used outdoors.

Decorate with children, pets, and your surroundings in mind

If you have little ones or furry friends running around, make sure they can’t create an electrical safety hazard. Secure all lights and other electronics out of their reach. It’s also best to keep lights away from driveways, swimming pools, and other electrical power lines.

Unplug Appliances When Not In Use

Did you know that appliances such as coffee makers and toasters can pose a fire hazard if left on and unattended? Unplug appliances when not in use to reduce the risk of fire. It’s a good idea to unplug as many unused appliances as possible, especially on Christmas Day, so that you don’t overload your electrical supply.

Use Surge Protectors

Surge protectors can help protect your electronic devices from power surges and spikes. This is especially common on Christmas Day due to families gathering and using many electrical devices and appliances at once. Don't overload surge protectors by plugging in too many devices.

Check Your Smoke Alarms

Last but certainly not least, don’t forget to check that your smoke detectors are all working. Every Australian home should be fitted with functioning smoke detectors to alert you and your family in the case of a fire.

By following these tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season. If you have any questions or need electrical assistance, contact our team of electricians on the Sunshine Coast.
